Eloping - the do's and don'ts

ELOPING DO’S AND DON’TS

COVID19 really changed the wedding industry forever, basically making 2020 the rebirth of elopements. Eloping can be a romantic and intimate way to exchange vows, but it's important to consider the legal requirements and plan ahead. If you keep these do's and don'ts in mind, your elopement will be a fun, care-free, memorable moment.

Here are my top tips for those of you considering eloping:

DO'S:

  1. Consider the legal requirements for getting married in the location you've chosen. Make sure you have all the necessary documents and that you understand the process.
  2. Plan ahead. Eloping is generally a spontaneous ceremony, but it's still important to have a plan in place. This includes making sure you have a backup plan in case of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
  3. Choose a meaningful location. Whether it's a place that holds special significance for the two of you or a place you've always dreamed of visiting, choosing a location that has personal meaning will make your elopement even more special.
  4. Include a small group of close friends or family members. While eloping is often thought of as just the couple, you can still include a few close friends or family members in your celebration.

DON'TS:

  1. Don't forget to inform your family and friends of your plans. While eloping is a personal decision, it's still important to let your loved ones know what you're doing and when (you don't want to cause the drama you tried avoiding by eloping anyway!)
  2. Don't forget about the admin (ew.) If your elopement plan doesn't include formalities, like signing a registry, make sure you have done the legal stuff first!
  3. Don't completely forget a celebration. Whether it's heading to the bar with friends, or a house party or dinner, plan something to allow those closest to you to celebrate your union.
  4. Don't forget to take photos or videos. Eloping is a once-in-a-lifetime event and having a record of it will allow you to relive the memories for years to come.

There are pro's and con's to eloping and throwing a massive wedding. It just depends on your vibe and how you two want to start your married life together. Although the traditional wedding is still such a beautiful celebration of love, elopements are a very special, wonderfully intimate display of love and commitment.
